What is the human-elephant conflict?

The

Human/Elephant

Conflict

Human viewpoint:

  • Elephants damage and eat our crops.

  • Elephants destroy our property including fences, buildings, and vehicles.

  • Elephants attack and even kill people.

Elephant viewpoint:

  • People take the land and plant crops.

  • People build roads, put up fences and fragment us from the land and our herds.

  • People taunt us, shoot us and chain us for show.

  • We are driven from our land using horrendous methods of shooting firecrackers and bullets to try and scare us away.

A Sri Lankan Tusker killed near Illiya in January 2016 because it raided a coconut plantation.

IT HAPPENS FAR TOO OFTEN...WHAT CAN BE DONE?

  • Education

  • Secure areas with electric fencing

  • Provide space with grass, fruiting trees, fresh water to drink and for bathing

  • Add your suggestion...let us know.
